How many hours have you wasted away in the simulated universe of Football Manager?
If you’re anything like us, it’s been enough to make your girlfriend leave you and your family question whether you’re still alive.
True story.
Football Manager 2018 was no different, with the most-recent instalment of the series just as addictive and time-consuming as ever.
But like anything in life (other than the World Cup, of course), we think there’s plenty of room for new features and improvements.

7 Include VAR/goal-line technology

My word, this was great fun over the summer, wasn’t it?
For the first time ever, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used at the World Cup and it certainly left a lasting impression.
After all, there were 29 penalties in Russia and VAR was used to help determine 11 of them – including one in the final.
No doubt we’ll be seeing more of the technology next season, and it’ll certainly be great to see how Football Manager implements it into the game.
6 Improvements to the match-engine
Could this look better?
Every year, it seems those folks over at Sports Interactive make slight changes to the match engine.
But we’d love to seem more, as it’s still a long way off the crisp beauty of FIFA and PES – not that we’re exactly expecting photo-realistic graphics.
Still, some nice player animations would be well received.
Maybe some great-looking goal celebrations or general life-like reactions to in-game occurrences would help set the tone.
5 Reserve team/youth team management

Pep Guardiola did it, and so did Zinedine Zidane.
Starting out as the reserve team manager is how some of the very best cut their teeth into the world of management.
And we’d love to be able to start out as Chelsea’s youth team boss, or to guide Arsenal’s reserve team safely into fourth-place in Premier League 2, before landing a top-job in one of the big leagues.
4 Temporary appointments

How awesome would it be take charge of a club on a temporary deal, especially if they’re a big club on the back end of a terrible season.
It would certainly offer an interesting challenge, and the chance to be offered a full-time role if you do a decent job.
3 Meddling owners

Roman Abramovich, we’re looking at you.
Imagine the unique challenge of taking over at a club, only to have the owner constantly on your back.
Sign this player, play like this, don’t drop him. OR ELSE.
It’d be a nightmare, but it would also give us a realistic view into some of s*** real-life managers occasionally have to put up with from owners who think they know it all.
2 Create your own stadium

A little bit different, perhaps, but it’d certainly be cool to get involved in helping to design your club’s new stadium.
Right now, improving your ground is merely automated, and makes an expanded stadium just another statistic.
But if SI looked at how the old LMA series handle stadium creation – which let you dictate which aspects of the stadium was improved – then it could certainly act as a fun distraction
1 Better looking REGENS
We’re currently stuck with the fella on the right
If you play the game for a couple of seasons or more (which is easily done, if you’re a fan of the series) then sooner or later, these guys will start to show up.
Regens, or Newgens as they’re sometimes known, are players the game generates every season to simulate youth players coming through each club’s academy.
You can tell which players are regens, as they have a 3D-generated face on their profile, and to put it plainly, the regens in last year’s game looked absolutely dreadful.
Worse still, the new 3-D models used for FM18 meant mods such as hair packs no longer worked to improve their style.
Seriously, sort this one out, SI.
