Argentina players set to retire en masse after World Cup debacle

After a storm comes the calm.

Unfortunately Argentina are currently in the midst of a category five hurricane.

The dust has barely settled after Argentina’s dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of Croatia but reports are already coming in about which players are set to call it a day when the tournament ends.

Javier Mascherano is the most experienced player on the list- boasting 145 caps across a 15-year international career.

Angel Di Maria is also reportedly set to quit international duty, having racked up 93 caps for the La Albiceleste.

Sergio Aguero, Argentina’s third-highest goalscorer, joins Mascherano and Di Maria in reportedly calling it a day.

Man United defender Marcos Rojo, rumoured Arsenal target Ever Banega and AC Milan midfeidler Lucas Biglia make it six.

But what about the main man?

Lionel Messi’s international future looks uncertain, with the TNT Sports tweet claiming that both him and Gonzalo Higuain are contemplating international retirement.

Messi- Argentina’s record goalscorer- has made 126 international appearances but has failed to steer his country to World Cup or Copa America honours.

If Messi was to call it a day he’d be doing so with an Under-20 World Cup and Olympic Gold Medal in his trophy cabinet but questions still lingering around his international legacy.

It could all have been so different if Higuain had finished his chances in either the 2014 World Cup or 2016 Copa America finals.

On both occasions Higuain bottled one-on-one chances at key points in the game, much to the dismay of Messi and co.

First he was disappointed by Gonzalo. Then Willy let him down. What next for Messi?
