This stat will make you reassess everything you thought about Chelsea and their youth players

You don’t want to be a youngster at Chelsea, you’ll never get any game time.

All you have to do is take a trip to Vitesse Arnhem to find out for yourself where Chelsea youth products go to see out their playing days.

Well that is what we have been used to for a long time but it looks like Antonio Conte could be changing things.

Chelsea comfortably brushed past Newcastle 3-0 to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup but there was very interesting fact about two of their players.

When Callum Hudson-Odoi was subbed on in the 81st minute Chelsea became the first English top flight team to field two players who were born after the year 2000.

Ethan Ampadu came on in the 78th minute and immediately impressed with an inch-perfect pass to land the ball on Pedro’s chest flying into the area but he couldn’t tuck it away.

It may have been a barbed message aimed at Chelsea’s board that the manager feels he has not been sufficiently backed in the transfer market but it is very impressive that Conte could play two 17-year-olds against Premier League opposition.

Chelsea have a reputation for not giving their youth products a chance but it is good to see that Conte is willing to throw them in at the deep end.

Ampadu was signed from Exeter last summer and while many thought he would be straight out on loan the Wales international has already made his Premier League debut.

Hudson-Odoi has been coming through the Chelsea academy for the last 10 years and this game against the Magpies marked his club debut.

It is yet more good news for England as they put together a team that is guaranteed to walk the 2022 World Cup with the current crop of amazingly talented youngsters coming through at major clubs.

Let us dream.
